North Lombok is dominated by the 3,726 m Mount Rinjani, an active stratovolcano. Rinjani is also the second highest volcano in Indonesia, second only to Mount Kerinci on Sumatra and is Indonesias third highest peak. North Lombok has recently become a new district with Tanjung as its main capital or town.

North Lombok offers stunning landscapes and long curves of deserted beaches. Jungles and rain forests, waterfalls, rivers and unique flora and fauna makes North Lombok region an ideal area for those who appreciate true natural beauty.

North Lombok is accessible from Mataram by two main road, both with good condition and providing different scenic routes.

The highlands are forest clad and mostly undeveloped. The lowlands are highly cultivated. Rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, cacao, cloves, cassava, corn, coconuts, copra, bananas and vanilla are the major crops grown in the fertile soils of the island.

The slopes are populated by the indigenous Sasak population. There are also some basic tourist related activities established on Rinjani primarily in or about the village of Senaru. The northern part of Lombok has deep traditions and still holds a repository of original Sasak beliefs and customs.

To most visitors, North Lombok means one thing – the jumping off point to the famous of Gili Islands or the challenging eco tours of Mt Rinjani.

While the tiny tropical Gilis are unforgettable, it would be a crime to miss out on the rest of North Lombok.  Aside from the colossal Mount Rinjani volcano, most of North Lombok is pure virgin territory to all but the most intrepid independent traveller and only now getting the plaudits and publicity it deserves.

Tanjung, the capital of North Lombok Regency - is home to a few glamorous hotel resorts and an awesome championship golf course (The Kosaido).
